Marriage

Hispanics as a group display a high commitment to marriage. In 1995, 61% of Hispanic women age 15-44 had been married at some point in their lives, compared with 43.1% of Black women. (CDC, National Center for Health Statistics)

Cohabitation

Cohabitation is less common among Hispanics than other groups. In 1995, 73% of Hispanic women had never cohabitated, compared with 58% of white women. (National Center for Health Statistics)

Young Marriages

Latino youth are more likely than non-Latino white and African American youth to marry young. One eighth (13%) of Latinas 18 and 19 years old are married.

Divorce

Latino adults are less likely to be divorced than those of other groups. Six percent of Latino adults are divorced compared to 12% of African Americans and 10% of non-Latino whites.

Starting Families out of Marriage

Hispanic women have a high rate of out of wedlock birthrate and statistics indicate that the rate is only increasing. 43.5% of all Hispanic births were to unmarried Hispanic women in 2002. (National Vital Statistics Reports)

Same Sex Couples

Female same-sex couples in which both partners are Hispanic raise children at more than twice the rate (66%) of white non-Hispanic female same-sex couples (32%).

More Hispanic female same-sex couples (54%) report raising at least one child under the age of 18, compared to Hispanic married opposite-sex couples (70%) and Hispanic cohabiting opposite-sex couples (59%).

HIV

In 1999, the age-adjusted death rate for HIV was 32.7 per 100,000 for Puerto Ricans living on the mainland U.S., higher than any other racial or ethnic group, more than six times the national average (5.4 per 100,000) and more than 13 times the rate for non-Hispanic whites (2.4 per 100,000)
