Geographic Disbursement


The concentration of Latinos are greatest in California (13M or 36% of the total population), Texas (8.3M or 36% of the total population), Florida (3.6M), New York (3.1M) and Illinois (1.8M). 13 states have over half a million in population of Latinos and 22 states having Hispanics as the largest racial or ethnic minority group.

New Mexico has the largest percentage of the total population (43%), but the states with largest growth rate are Arkansas (60.9% growth), Georgia (59.4%), South Carolina (57.4%), Tennessee (55.5%) and North Carolina (54.9%).

Top five *counties* by growth rate are Kendall County, IL (203.9% growth), Luzerne County, PA (175.9%), Loudoun County, VA (151.1%), Prince William County, VA (146.9%) and Frederick County, MD (143.7%).

In all regions, Hispanics have the largest percentage change, but some comparisons might put the numbers in context. In the south, total percentage change of the population was 8.5%, while for Hispanics, the change was 31.2%. In the Northeast, 2.0% percent for the total population, 15.1% for Hispanics. Midwest, 2.7% for the total population, 26.1% for Hispanics.

The U.S. is the third largest Spanish-speaking country in the world. Only Mexico and Colombia have larger Hispanic populations than the U.S.
